Carpet vs. Wood: What's Best For Your Home?

31st March 2014

Most of us barely think about flooring, but the flooring you choose for your home or business can have lasting implications. Ideally, you want a carpet or other flooring solution that:

Is pleasing to the eye

This is a subjective matter; everyone has different tastes. As a result, unless the flooring is for your own home and you live alone, it might be worth asking other people what they think of the various flooring options available.

Complements its surroundings and the character of the room it is going into. It is important, for example, that the colour and design works well with the décor in the room that the flooring will be installed into. Also, some rooms may have a more relaxed and friendly atmosohere – a children’s playroom, perhaps – and require different flooring to (say) the entrance hall of a stately home or dining area in an upmarket restaurant, where a more traditional or formal look may be deemed suitable (such as that achieved by wooden flooring).

Is able to cope with the stresses and strains put on it. For example, the floor of an industrial kitchen or call centre is likely to get far more traffic and sustain far more spillages than the carpet of a single person who takes pride in keeping their home in spotless condition.

Takes into account practical considerations. For example, safety flooring is an ideal solution for situations where there would otherwise be a real risk of people slipping and injuring themselves, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Also, if you have young children, you might want to consider opting for flooring that be cleaned with disinfectant, such as vinyl flooring, to minimize the risk of them catching germs from the floor.
